Today we celebrate Earth Day, and it got me thinking, what are we actually celebrating, the planet, us living on the planet? Well maybe the two are mutually exclusive.
Without us the there is no ‘Earth Day’ and without the planet there is no ‘us’, and maybe that’s the whole point.

I recently found a treasure on a friends bookshelf “Effluent America”, by Professor Martin V. Melosi who asks, ‘what is the difference between an anthill and a city?’ His analogy provides an interesting perspective between two massively different inhabitants of this little planet we call Earth. In comparing the two we quickly understand the similar survival needs such as protection from predators and weather, the need to work and build, creation of communities, need for transport and to self sustain with food. Most of us would likely not give much thought to an anthill, but what’s beneath our feet may actually surprise us, as this study recently discovered.

So, regardless of what country, belief system, culture, lifestyle or species we belong to there’s one undeniable commonality we all share, Earth. Without it we cease to exist whether we live on land, water or even in an anthill.

Happy Earth Day

Note* As this was a scientific project, we assume and hope the incredible ants from this colony were handled responsibly.
